Description General view on monument inside church

Date 1959

Collection Records of the Scottish National Buildings Record, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 400793

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Monument, Macleod Burial Enclosure, Tarbat Old Parish Church, Tarbatness Road, Portmahomack, Highland Tarbat Old Parish Church was built in 1756 on medieval foundations. This monument in the burial enclosure of the Macleods of Geanies shows a female mourner and two urns bearing the initials of William Macleod (died 1805) and Patrick Macleod (died 1807). The enclosure was erected in about 1700. Burials inside churches were banned in 1581. Wealthy families got around this by converting disused religious structures into mausolea, by adding burial-aisles to churches, and, in the 17th century, by creating separate burial-enclosures.
