Scope and Content View of ships in Invergordon Harbour, Ross and Cromarty Invergordon was established as a fishing settlement by the Gordons of Invergordon Castle in the mid-18th century. It expanded during the 19th century, becoming a police burgh in 1864, and was the major deep-water port on the Cromarty Firth. This shows the busy harbour of Invergordon at the end of the 19th century. The Harbour itself was begun in 1825-6, and reconstructed in 1856 and again in 1894. A ramped ferry pier was installed in 1817 by Thomas Telford. Modern dockyard facilities were founded in the 1900s, with a naval base established in 1913. Invergordon remained a Fleet anchorage, and the Royal Navy continued to have a presence in the harbour until after World War II. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
