Description Foulis Castle. Interior-detail of cross-lined door in Kitchen on Ground Floor of North wing.

Catalogue Number SC 400248

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of RC 1849

Scope and Content Detail of cross-lined door in ground floor kitchen of north wing of Foulis Castle, Ross and Cromarty Foulis Castle, in its present form, was built between 1740 and 1777 by the Munro family who had owned the land since the 13th century. Parts of its masonry contain sections of an earlier tower-house which existed by 1587 and had burnt down. The kitchen door is cross-lined for strength. This means that it is constructed using two layers of timber, each with the grain at right-angles to the other -the wood on this side lies vertically, while on the other side it lies horizontally.
