Scope and Content Dovecot, Cadboll estate, Highland Cadboll's key buildings were added by different owners: the castle in the 16th-century, probably by the Bishop of Ross's factor; the house, by Aeneas Macleod in about 1680; and the walled garden, probably in the late 18th century, by the Macleod heirs. This dovecot, to the south of the main complex, was built in about 1700 and is of the 'lectern' type popular in Scotland and the north of England. The parapet running along the crest of the building is decorated with ball-finials. Dovecots usually housed up to 1,000 pigeons. When the birds were eaten, their feathers were used for bedding. Their dung could be used as a fertiliser, or sold to use in tanning or for the extraction of saltpetre to make gunpowder. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
