Castle Leod. Detail of carving in hallway.

SC 400145

Description Castle Leod. Detail of carving in hallway.

Date 25/9/1958

Collection Records of the Scottish National Buildings Record, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 400145

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of RC 207

Scope and Content Gun-port, south front of Castle Leod, near Strathpeffer, Highland Castle Leod was probably rebuilt after 1608 - the year Roderick Mackenzie received the estate from his brother - and enlarged a few years later. It fell into disuse in the 18th century and was restored, altered and extended in the 19th century. This gun-port pierces the front of the south extension of the east-west block. It was probably intended as much for show as for defence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
