Scope and Content Inverness United Charities Institution (now Ardkeen Tower), Culduthel Road, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. Inverness United Charities Institution (now Ardkeen Tower) was built in 1834-6 to accommodated the Inverness Juvenile female School, Ladies' Work Society, and Inverness Infant School, all under one roof. The tower was used as an observatory. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
