Scope and Content 1960 photograph of platforms of Inverness Railway Station, Station Square, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. This postcard shows the platforms of Inverness Railway Station in 1960. The station was built in 1855 to designs by Joseph Mitchell and extended in 1876 by Murdoch Paterson. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
