Scope and Content 1960s view of Clunes House, Causeway, Cromarty, Highland Cromarty was a depopulated and poor burgh until 1772 when George Ross purchased the Cromarty estate and went on to establish a rope-works and a brewery. The town flourished until about 1850 when both enterprises failed. This shows Clunes House in 1961. It was probably built in the 18th century. One of the skewputs - the decorative stone where the gable meets the wall-head - bears the inscription: JOHN CLUNES / ISSOBEL GRAHAM / 1724. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
