Scope and Content Entrance to Stockbridge Market from Hamilton Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge Market, designed c.1825 by Archibald Scott on the model of the Liverpool Market, included stalls selling meat, poultry, fish and vegetables in the manner of a country town. It was never a great success and closed in 1906. The Greek Doric entrance, domestic in scale compared to the grand entrance to the market from St Stephen Street, has a central bay which gives access to the common stair of the four-storeyed tenement above. The outer bays are pends leading to the market. In the early 19th century, Edinburgh people, both rich and poor, relied on the fish and meat markets below the North Bridge, and the vegetable and flower markets in the High Street for local produce.
