Scope and Content Aerial view of the Old Town, Edinburgh This aerial view shows the Old Town area of Edinburgh stretching between the railway (left) to the Cowgate (right), and from the North and South Bridges (top) to the head of the Lawnmarket (bottom). In the centre is the open crown spire of St Giles' Cathedral. Originally dating from c.1130, what is seen today is mainly late 14th and 15th century. William Burn refaced the stonework in 1829 and the Thistle Chapel was added in 1911 by Robert Lorimer. Opposite St Giles' (left) is the City Chambers built by John Fergus in 1753. With additions in 1890 and 1900, the building incorporates Mary King's Close and other closes and tenements which were closed up due to plague in the 18th century.
