Scope and Content Aerial view of Culloden House, Highland Culloden House stands c.4km north-east of Inverness, just north-west of Culloden Muir, the site of the famous battle in 1746. It is reputed that Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Prince Charles Edward Stewart or Bonnie Prince Charlie) stayed at the original house before the battle. This aerial view shows the house which replaced the original Culloden House, which was burnt down shortly after the Battle of Culloden. The present house was built c.1790 and consists of a two-storeyed block with two flanking wings joined by screen walls. The present Culloden House was built for Arthur Forbes. Although it is not known who the architect was, it has been suggested that it was built to designs drawn up by John Adam (1721-92) for John Forbes, Arthur's father. It is now an hotel.
