Scope and Content Dovecot, 52 High Street, Inverkeithing, Fife The dovecot at 52 High Street is one of three rectangular examples from the 17th century surviving at Inverkeithing. The lean-to style of rectangular dovecot is most common in Scotland and the North of England. Dovecots, despite their name, usually housed up to 1000 pigeons. When the birds were eaten, their feathers were used for bedding. Their dung could be used as a fertiliser, or sold to use in tanning or for the extraction of saltpetre to make gunpowder.
