Scope and Content Dovecot, number 2,4 Bank Street, Inverkeithing, Fife The dovecot in the garden of 2,4 Bank Street is one of three late 17th-century rectangular dovecots to survive in Inverkeithing. Inverkeithing, 2, 4 Bank Street, Dovecot / Residential / / Dovecot / DIGITAL IMAGES Dovecots, despite their name, usually housed up to 1000 pigeons. When the birds were eaten, their feathers were used for bedding. Their dung could be used as a fertiliser, or sold to use in tanning or for the extraction of saltpetre to make gunpowder.
