Scope and Content End pavilion, Mansfield Place, Edinburgh, at the corner with Bellevue Crescent Mansfield Place, a short terrace running from London Street to the corner of Bellevue Crescent, forms part of the eastern boundary of the northern New Town. Designed by Thomas Bonnar c.1818, it was built in 1820 under the supervision of Thomas Brown. This end pavilion, similar to those of Bellvue Crescent and London Street, has an extra attic floor above a heavy cornice. Giant Ionic pilasters run the length of the first and second floors. Mansfield Place appears in the original scheme for the northern New Town in 1802. It was named after judge William Murray, Earl of Mansfield, who was made a burgess of Edinburgh after his defence of the town's conduct in the Porteus Riot case of 1736.
