Scope and Content Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh, looking to the south Bellevue Crescent, designed by Thomas Bonnar in 1818, forms an elegant and near-symmetrical curve with St Mary's Church at its centre. The southern half was completed in 1832, and the northern section, due to the steep slope, was completed later in 1884. The northern half of the crescent, stepped down the hill, was built with main door tenements which look like houses. It shows many economies compared to the southern half as when it was finally completed this part of town was no longer fashionable. Although the southern half of the crescent was finished by 1832, the steep slope on the north side discouraged further building. In 1869 David Cousin modified Bonnar's design, and in 1884 the northern half was finally built under John Lessel's direction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
