Scope and Content Early 19th-century engraving of St Mary's Church, Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh Bellevue Crescent, designed by Thomas Bonnar in 1818, forms an elegant and near-symmetrical curve with St Mary's Church at its centre. The southern half was completed in 1832, and the northern section, due to the steep slope, was completed later in 1884. This engraving shows the completed southern half of the crescent, and the church with its imposing six-columned Corinthian portico, and tall elegant steeple. The steep slope to the north of the church discouraged further building at that time. St Mary's Church was designed in 1824, not by a famous architect, but by the City Superintendent of Works, Thomas Brown, and built for the Town Council. Brown revised Thomas Bonnar's 1818 design for Bellevue Crescent in order to incorporate the church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
