Scope and Content Aerial view of a fort at Camp Tops, Scottish Borders Occupying the summit of Camp Tops is a small oval fort. In the surrounding area are traces of early cultivation. The summit is defended by twin ramparts, while on the flank of the hill (on the lower left) there are more ruinous traces of an outer line of rampart. The interior is filled with the remains of numerous round-houses. Whilst appearing impressive, many hillforts probably were constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders, often occupying prominent positions in the landscape.
