Scope and Content The White House, Number 1 The Esplanade, Anstruther Wester, Fife The White House was built in 1760 during the burgh's economic recovery. The house is seen here on the corner at the beginning of The Esplanade. A chimney-gable with a curving pediment rises from the roof over the front of the house. Anstruther Wester began as part of a fishing town, becoming a Burgh of Barony in 1541, and a Royal Burgh in the 1580s. A 'mean town' in 1616, it suffered economic damage from the Act of Union in 1707 but recovered in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
