Scope and Content St Margaret's Memorial RC Church, Dunfermline, Fife St Margaret's Memorial RC Church was designed by R Rowand Anderson in 1889. It was intended to rival the Presbyterian's Abbey Church which occupied the site of St Margaret's original shrine, but its construction was hampered by financial problems. The church was finally completed in 1936 after many of the impressive features of the original plan had been abandoned because of cost. These included an impressive tower that should have stood where the car is parked (left). St Margaret (c.1045-93) was a half-German Anglo-Saxon princess who fled to Scotland after 1066 and married King Malcolm Canmore. Her good works, including continental-style church 'reform', helped strengthen the Canmore dynasty. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
