Scope and Content Redrawn from DC 32326 for publication with comparative plans of townships. Plan of a farmstead at Arresgill, Dumfries and Galloway The remains of a post-medieval farmstead lie on a steep east-facing slope situated some 200m south-west of Arresgill steading. Arresgill was probably part of a larger farming unit along with the nearby farmstead at Rain Sike. The farmstead at Arresgill lies at the head of a system of ridged fields. The plan here shows at least four rectangular buildings, some with stone wall-footings, arranged in a compact group. Prior to the mid-18th century, tenant farmers and their families often dwelt in fermtouns, a loose collection of dwellings, byres and barns surrounded by fields. The better land was used for arable crops, the poorer used for the communal grazing of stock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
