Plan showing buildings at Boyken Burn, Dumfries and Galloway At the entrance to the valley of the Boyken Burn are the remains of a post-medieval fermtoun, comprising at least three groups of building platforms. Each lies along the line of a dyke separating them from the ridged fields of the fermtoun. The plan shows several building platforms built end on into the slope, with a series of interconnected yards cut into the slope. The platforms likely represent the actual size of the turf-walled buildings which probably only had a single compartment. Prior to the mid-18th century, most tenant farmers and their families lived in fermtouns, a loose collection of dwellings, byres and barns surrounded by fields. The better land was used for arable crops, the poorer used for the communal grazing of stock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
