Plan showing buildings at Boyken Burn, Dumfries and Galloway The remains of this fermtoun lie at the entrance to the valley of the Boyken Burn, grouped into four distinct clusters of building platforms. Each group lies along the line of a dyke separating them from the ridged fields of the settlement. The cluster of building platforms shown here probably represents a single farmstead, comprising at least four buildings with an adjacent yard. The platforms are built end on into the uphill slope and within the enclosed yard are traces of lazy-beds. Prior to the mid-18th century, most tenant farmers and their families lived in fermtouns, a loose collection of dwellings, byres and barns surrounded by fields. The better land was used for arable crops, the poorer used for the communal grazing of stock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
