Scope and Content Drawing of a cross-incised stone from Staplegordon, Dumfries and Galloway Little remains of the old parish church of Staplegordon, its site indicated by a grassy rectangular platform near the centre of the burial-ground. Within the graveyard are a number of fine 18th-century headstones. This roughly kite-shaped boulder bears an incised cross, and has been built into the burial-ground wall. The stone is thought to be of Early Christian date, and was presumably a grave-marker. The parish church at Staplegordon was founded by William de Cunigburc, and he granted its revenues to Kelso Abbey around 1153. The church was demolished following the absorption of Staplegordon into the newly created parish of Langholm in 1703. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
