Description Publication drawing; Plan of Windy Edge chambered long cairn.
Date 1996
Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu
Catalogue Number SC 381994
Category On-line Digital Images
Copy of DC 32554
Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32461. Unattributed, [1996]. Plan of long cairn known as Windy Edge, Dumfries and Galloway Situated within an upland forestry plantation clearing, this chambered cairn has been mutilated by stone robbing, obliterating much of the cairn's 'tail'. On this plan, the dark grey represents the visible remains of the cairn, with a ruined burial chamber at the west. The lighter tone shows the cairn's probable outline, based on a spread of cairn material and a description of the cairn in 1795. Long cairns and long barrows form a group of early Neolithic monuments with a wide distribution throughout Britain. Excavations have shown complex timber or stone structures (mortuary structures) lie beneath these cairns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
