Scope and Content Plan of Castle O'er, Dumfries and Galloway Castle O'er is one of the largest Iron Age forts in Upper Eskdale and was evidently an important local centre of power. Located on the summit of Castle O'er Hill, the fort overlooks the valleys of the White Esk to the west and the Black Esk to the east. Within the ramparts are remains of numerous round-houses and stances, arranged on either side of what was probably a roadway running through the fort. As few of these buildings likely stood at any one time, they represent several phases of occupation. Limited excavations were conducted by a local antiquary, Richard Bell, at the turn of the 19th century. Stray finds from around the site (held in Dumfries Museum) include several Iron Age spindle whorls, part of a glass finger-ring and a number of beads. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
