Scope and Content View showing the ditch around the motte at Lochmaben Old Castle, Dumfries and Galloway This motte, known as Lochmaben Old Castle, is situated on a neck of land between the Kirk Loch and Castle Loch. The de Brus family built it to replace their castle at Annan which collapsed due to river erosion. The motte occupies the southern end of a ridge between the two lochs. A deep and broad ditch, seen here, surrounds the base of the motte, barring access from all directions. During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Norman nobles, including the de Brus family, received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as symbols of their lordship as well as fortified residences for themselves and retainers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
