Scope and Content View of the motte-and-bailey at Wamphray Place, Dumfries and Galloway Remains of a motte-and-bailey stand on a promontory situated on the western-most edge of Wamphray Glen. Though partly eroded, the typical pudding-bowl shape of the motte is still recognisable. The motte was probably cut from a natural hillock. To the right lay the bailey, overlain by a number of late medieval/post-medieval buildings. The lands of Wamphray were held by the Corrie family until 1357, passing to Roger Kirkpatrick around this date. By 1476 Wamphray was in the hands of the Johnstones, a powerful Dumfries-shire family, who sold the estate to the Earl of Hopetoun in 1747. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
