Scope and Content 1824 map of Kirkcaldy, Fife Kirkcaldy's origins are medieval, but it prospered particularly as a royal burgh in the 17th century when its harbour served over 100 ships. Its textile industry expanded in the 18th-century and, from the mid 19th century, specialised in floor coverings. This map shows Kirkcaldy in 1824. The earliest part of the High Street is beside the harbour (top right). The section bending away from the shoreline was a recent result of the town's growing prosperity.
