Scope and Content Coal Preparation Plant, Barony Colliery, Ayrshire Barony Colliery's Shafts 1 and 2 opened in 1910 under Bairds and Dalmellington Ltd. Shaft 3, planned in 1938, opened in 1945. Shaft 2 collapsed and Shaft 1 was filled in 1962. Production halted until 1965 when shaft 4 was sunk. The mine closed in 1989. Coal enters the top of the plant by belt conveyor from the Car-Hall at the top of Number 3 Shaft. It is washed and sorted using sieves or screens. Water-logged coal-dust, or slurry, is transported to a specially developed power station nearby. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
