Scope and Content Pithead Baths, Monkton Hall Colliery, Midlothian Monkton Hall Colliery was sunk in 1954-67 and was one of the National Coal Board's five Scottish super-pits. Coal production reached 5,000 tons per day in 1968. Most of the output went to Cockenzie Power Station. It was closed in 1997 and then demolished. This is the view of the Pithead Baths from the top of Number 1 Winding Tower. The low building to its right is the Canteen. After 1911, colliery owners were required by law to provide pithead baths for the miners so they could wash the coal dust off their bodies and out of their clothes before going home.
