Description General view from top of No. 1 shaft winding-tower (from West) of the 3180 tonne rapid-loading surface bunker, capable of loading five 32-tonne wagons simultaneously, loading a complete 29-wagon train in about 30 minutes. When working, trains delivered all the mine's daily output of coal to Cockenzie Power Station nearby.

Scope and Content Rapid-loading surface bunker, Monkton Hall Colliery, Midlothian Monkton Hall Colliery was sunk in 1954-67 and was one of the National Coal Board's five Scottish super-pits. Coal production reached 5,000 tons per day in 1968. Most of the output went to Cockenzie Power Station. It was closed in 1997 and then demolished. Railway wagons pass under the rapid-loading surface bunker. The bunker loads five wagons with coal at a time, and can fill a 29-wagon train in just under half an hour.
