Scope and Content Boiler-House, Monkton Hall Colliery, Midlothian Monkton Hall Colliery was sunk in 1954-67 and was one of the National Coal Board's five Scottish super-pits. Coal production reached 5,000 tons per day in 1968. Most of the output went to Cockenzie Power Station. It was closed in 1997 and then demolished. This is the Boiler-House from the top of Number 1 Winding Tower. The two boilers inside provide steam mostly for heating purposes around the colliery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
