Scope and Content Repentance Tower, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire John Maxwell, 4th Lord Herries, had Repentance Tower built in the 1560s on the summit of Trailtrow Hill. It was originally built as a lookout and signalling post for Hoddom Castle. The word Repentance is carved on the door, probably as a token of regret, as the tower was built out of the remains of a demolished chapel. The tower stands in the graveyard of the former chapel. The tower was intended as a lookout. In 1579 Maxwell said that 'the watch tower upon Trailtrow called Repentance must be mended of the little defacing the English army made of it' (probably in 1570). In the 18th century the parapet was reconstructed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
