Scope and Content Statue of 'Old Mortality and his pony', Rotunda, Church Street, Dumfries The columned octagonal rotunda dates to 1841 and was designed by John Gregan. Inside it, there are carved figures of a man and his pony by John Currie. The man is Robert Paterson (1712-1800). Robert Paterson was the model for Sir Walter Scott's 'Old Mortality'. He was an itinerant mason who spent his life maintaining, erecting and re-inscribing monuments dedicated to the Covenanters all over Dumfries and Galloway. The Covenanters (those who subscribed to the National Covenant of 1638) were pro-presbyterian and anti-episcopal. They were involved in open rebellion and guerilla activities during the mid-17th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
