Scope and Content Ruthwell Museum, Ruthwell, Dumfries The present museum buildings were once used as the premises for the first savings bank in Scotland. Established by the Rev. Henry Duncan, the parish minister, the Male and Female Friendly Society Hall opened in May 1810. The buildings may have been constructed as early as 1760, probably as two adjoining single-storeyed three-bay cottages, each having an off-centre door. The buildings are of whitewashed rubble with a slated roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
