Scope and Content Second-floor plan of tower-house of Skipness Castle, Knapdale, Argyll Skipness Castle was begun before 1261 by the MacSweens, lost to Walter Stewart Earl of Menteith in 1262, inherited by Robert II, then granted to the Lords of the Isles in 1376. On their forfeiture in 1493, it went to the Campbell Earls of Argyll. The second floor contains parts of the old chamber-block (left) and of the medieval curtain wall (right). The embrasure in the north wall (top) leads to a crosslet arrow-loop which was part of the medieval battlements. James IV dispossessed the last of the semi-independent - or from the king's perspective, rebellious - MacDonald Lords of the Isles in 1493. The king granted their lands to the Campbell Earl of Argyll who he trusted to control the west coast of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
