Scope and Content General view of Belhaven Brewery, Dunbar Belhaven Brewery is one of the few surviving traditional town breweries in Scotland. Ale and beer was originally made for customers in their local areas. Until the mid-19th century, brewing was a much more important industry in Scotland than distilling. This is a view of the brewery from the south-east. The tall chimney of 1887 is attached to the brew-house, and the buildings with the pagoda-like roofs are the kilns. The brewery was founded in 1719 and rebuilt in 1814 and 1887 as a result of fires. By the mid-19th century, brewing was mainly a large-scale production industry catering for a mass market. However, some smaller brewers such as Belhaven managed to survive and expand their business, at the expense of other competitors. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
