Scope and Content View of the fireplace in the Drawing Room, Hill House, Helensburgh The drawing room of Hill House was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the Glasgow publisher, Walter Blackie, and his family. This photograph, taken in 1904 by Harry Bedford Lemere, shows Mackintosh's original scheme of decoration. The open fire, set into a surround inset with five droplet-shaped, coloured and mirrored mosaics, warms the living space at one end of the room. The walls are subdivided vertically by bands of silver with stylised roses arranged between. The National Trust for Scotland, who now owns the house, has recently restored the drawing room, carefully replacing the elaborate wall stencils. Much of the evidence for the original design of the room came from Lemere's early photographs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
