Scope and Content View from south-west of The Hill House, Helensburgh Hill House, Helensburgh, was designed in 1902-4 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the publisher, Walter Blackie. The exterior, photographed in 1904 by Harry Bedford Lemere, derives to some extent from Scottish vernacular architecture. The house is basically L-shaped with the longer wing, containing the principal accommodation, aligned on an east-west axis. It is two-storeyed but with an attic floor on the east side, and has its principal entrance set asymmetrically in the west façade. Hill House, considered as Mackintosh's 'masterpiece among houses', is Helensburgh's most famous house. It stands on a steep hill above the town with panoramic views to the south over the Firth of Clyde to the former shipbuilding town of Greenock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
