Scope and Content Plan of roadway on Conon Bridge, Maryburgh, Ross and Cromarty Thomas Telford, born in Dumfriesshire, trained as a stone-mason but studied architecture in his spare time. In 1787, aged 30, he went to Shrewsbury and under the patronage of William Pulteney, the richest commoner in England, his career flourished. Telford liked his roadways to rise towards the middle of his bridges for drainage purposes and to give a better appearance. The buttresses over the cutwaters continue up to form refuges for pedestrians, allowing them to stand aside from wheeled traffic. As an apprentice mason and later as a journeyman, Telford had acquired extensive and valuable practical experience working in the Langholm area. He worked on bridges, including the Langholm Bridge, on which his mason's mark can still be seen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
