Scope and Content Elevation of Conon Bridge, Maryburgh, Ross and Cromarty Thomas Telford, born in Dumfriesshire, trained as a stone-mason but studied architecture in his spare time. In 1787, aged 30, he went to Shrewsbury and under the patronage of William Pulteney, the richest commoner in England, his career flourished. Telford preferred to have an uneven number of arches, as at Conon Bridge. The arches were all built with the same springing point but increased in height and span towards the middle of the bridge. As an apprentice mason and later as a journeyman, Telford had acquired extensive and valuable practical experience working in the Langholm area. He worked on bridges, including the Langholm Bridge, on which his mason's mark can still be seen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
