Scope and Content The Water of Leith at St Bernard's Well, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith, has more of the character of a small town than a suburb, although the pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas was quite transformed by later development. This shows the Water of Leith at St Bernard's Well, a circular domed temple built in 1788 over a mineral spring, just west of St Bernard's Bridge at Stockbridge. A woodland walk, with railings on each side, follows the south bank of the river. The walk along the Water of Leith is the old Dean Path, part of an ancient route from Edinburgh to Granton, leading from Dean Village, where the river was once lined with mills, along the stony bed of the river to St Bernard's Bridge, Stockbridge.
