Scope and Content View of lock-keeper's cottages and Craigmarloch bascule bridge on the Forth and Clyde Canal This bascule bridge was built as part of the Forth and Clyde Canal. It was one of the last of the canal's structures to retain original features. As with many locks on Scotland's canals, cottages were built alongside to provide accommodation for the lock-keeper, who was often required to operate the bridges and locks by hand. The Forth and Clyde Canal was Scotland's earliest major, and also longest, canal. It was built in stages between 1768 and 1791. Its structures decayed rapidly after it closed in 1962.
