Scope and Content Courtyard of Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Argyll and Bute Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. The Campbells of Glenorchy continued to maintain and develop Kilchurn until the late 18th century when it was struck by lightning and fell into ruin. The earliest stronghold at Kilchurn was a plain oblong tower-house three storeys high surrounded by a curtain wall (the parapet was added in the later 16th century). Immediately to the SW was a small courtyard containing ancillary and domestic buildings. John Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane, constructed barracks between 1690-8 in response to the Highland War of 1689. A Government force occupied Kilchurn during the Jacobite rising of 1715 as Lord Breadalbane aided both Jacobite and Hanoverian causes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
