Scope and Content View of Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Argyll and Bute Kilchurn Castle was founded before 1449 by Sir Colin Campbell on land given to him by his father in 1432. It was the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy until the 17th century when, as Earls of Breadalbane, they acquired grander castles elsewhere. Kilchurn Castle was struck by lightning in the 1760s and was never restored. On the right of this 1933 photograph is the earliest part of the castle, a rectangular tower-house built prior to 1449. Stone tower-houses were popular, especially in lawless regions, from the 14th to the 17th century. They were cheap compared to a larger castle because they were secure against the everyday danger of armed raiders and thieves, but not against artillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
