Excavation photograph showing the Flavian II outer ditch, cutting Flavian I.

Description Excavation photograph showing the Flavian II outer ditch, cutting Flavian I.

Collection Papers of Sir Ian A Richmond, archaeologist, Oxford, England

Catalogue Number SC 364468

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DF 2531

Scope and Content Forts at Dalswinton, Bankhead, Dumfries and Galloway These Roman forts are at Dalswinton, Bankhead. There are two forts dating from the Flavian period almost exactly superimposed. The smaller of the two is earlier, but there does not seem to have been a break in occupation when the larger one was built. This image of the site was taken during its excavation. It shows a section of the outer defensive ditch from the later fort. It is also possible to see where this cuts across one of the earlier ditches. The forts have been excavated and the finds are now in Dumfries Museum. Both the forts are big enough to hold cavalry units. The Ala Petriana, the largest auxiliary cavalry unit known in Britain, may have been based in the later fort. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
