Scope and Content The collection of glass negatives records Richmond’s trenching and surveys of sites including Fendoch, 1937-8, Cleaven Dyke, Carzfield, Glenlochar, and Black Hill, all 1939, Inveresk, 1946-7 (drawings), Newstead, 1947, Cappuck, 1949, Woden Law, 1950, Inchtuthill, 1952-65, Dalswinton, 1954, and Stracathro.
Archive History Catalogue entries record that the glass negatives were donated by Lady Richmond. No formal record of accession has yet been identified. However, the format of cataloguing indicates that these were acquired prior to c.1983.
System of Arrangement The copy photographic prints are arranged by site.
Access Conditions Open. Access to the original glass negatives is subject to conservation requirements, but paper prints of all these are available in the Search Room, and a selection have been digitized and are viewable online. Please contact the archive in advance of a visit to confirm access to the material not yet digitised.
Administrative History Sir Ian A Richmond (1902-65). Born in Rochdale, Richmond was educated at Ruthin School, Denbighshire, Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and the British School at Rome. In 1926 he was appointed as a lecturer in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Queenâs University, Belfast, before returning to Rome in 1930 as Director of the British School. In 1935 he was appointed a lecturer in Roman-British studies at Kingâs College, Newcastle, becoming Professor in 1950. In 1944 he was appointed a commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, and in 1946 also of the commission for England. In 1956 he was appointed Professor of Archaeology of the Roman Empire at Oxford. He was knighted in 1964. Richmond carried out many excavations of Romano-British sites, including Segontium, Silchester and Chedworth. He was responsible for the pioneering excavations, generally small scale, of Roman forts in Scotland from 1936 onwards, including Fendoch (1937-8), Cleaven Dyke (1939), Inveresk (1946-7), and Inchtuthil (1952-65).
