Scope and Content View of drawbridge at Craigmarloch, Forth and Clyde Canal, North Lanarkshire This bascule bridge was built as part of the Forth and Clyde Canal. Consisting of two draw-bridges meeting in the middle, it was one of the last of the canal's structures to retain original features. This view shows the wooden fenders and gates in front of the bridge, which spans a narrow opening only 6.4m wide. The bridge was operated by a system of counter-weights and hand-powered gears, which are of a slightly different design on each bank. The Forth and Clyde Canal was Scotland's earliest major, and also longest, canal. It was built in stages between 1768 and 1791. Its structures decayed rapidly after it closed in 1962.
