Scope and Content Plan of fireplace in Bishop's chamber, first floor of main tower of Carnassarie Castle, overlooking Kilmartin valley, Argyll Carnassarie Castle was built in 1565-72 by John Carswell, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, on the land of his patron, the Earl of Argyll. In 1643, the feudal overlord, the Marquis of Argyll, granted it to the Campbells of Auchenbreck. The hearth is framed by anorth-eastlaborate surround of half-pillars or pilasters topped by a now-incomplete heavily moulded lintel. It is a good example of early Renaissance Scottish decorative stonework. John Carswell was Rector of Kilmartin and, from 1567, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. He was responsible for producing the 'Book of Common Order', also known as Knox's 'Liturgy' - the first book printed in Scots Gaelic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
