Scope and Content Drawing showing elevation of chimneypiece at Carnassarie Castle, Argyll and Bute Built 1565-72 for John Carswell, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, Carnassarie Castle was remodelled in the late 17th century, and was in ruins by 1844. In 1932, it was placed in the care of the Office of Works (now Historic Scotland) and has been repaired. This chimneypiece is in the north wall of the first-floor chamber in the tower. It has an elaborate pilastered surround surmounted by a matching pilastered lintel with an encircled quatrefoil (left) and a diamond-in-quatrefoil (right) motif. The chimneypiece is c.3.25m wide and, standing just over 4m high, reaches to the ceiling. This chamber would have been one of the principal public rooms in the castle, used for entertaining guests.
